Our first night we stayed in Burghausen. This town boasts having the largest castle in Europe. When we went to the castle we were surprised to learn they were having a renaissance fair. Thousands of people were dressed in costumes from the Middle Ages. There was food, drink, and bands that played well into the night. The fair lasts for three days and people bring their tents and stay in the castle. It seems that there are a number of these events and people just travel from castle to castle attending them.
